Last night the Ethex team had the pleasure of attending the Community Energy Awards 2017 #CEAwards17 held in the magnificent surrounding of City Hall in London. The event was a fantastic celebration of the achievements of the community energy sector as a whole and recognition for those individual groups and organisations that had made an outstanding contribution to community energy.
There was cause for celebration for Ethex and some of the projects that we work alongside, with Gower Regeneration winning the Community Renewable Energy Project Award for the outstanding renewable electricity generation project undertaken by a community group and Energise Barnsley being Highly Commended in the Local Authority Award for the local authority which has done most to help local community energy organisations through partnering, investing, policy or other support.
Gower Regeneration is a 1MW community-owned solar farm providing clean energy whose financial surpluses will support ecologically sensitive land-based livelihoods. Gower Regeneration is still taking investment but the offer will close on the 8th November. For anyone interested in investing in this project go to https://www.ethex.org.uk/GowerRegeneration.
There were inspiring speeches from Polly Billington of UK100 and David Powell from the New Economics Foundation, with a strong sense that community energy groups are the pioneers driving the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable sources and as such, they are in the vanguard of a new and sustainable energy future.
Talking with other attendees during the evening I was struck by how much collaboration there is taking place within the sector to tackle challenges such as local supply and demand management. I also had a couple of conversations about how community energy groups were making contact with other community organisations working in different sectors such as sustainable land use and exploring ways of working with them. This is a really exciting development and points to a future of greater collaboration within the community space which will amplify the positive change being driven by community organisations.
At Ethex we are proud to be part of this movement by helping community organisations to raise the money they need to deliver their positive social impacts, and by helping investors to invest their money so that it does good.
