Co Cars

What they do

Co Cars has a mission to provide low carbon, on demand, affordable shared mobility for all. Its vision is to create greener, calmer more connected places where people thrive.

Co Cars has been in the business of shared mobility since 2005. In the South West of England, it has a network of nearly 40 on-street hybrid and electric cars that stretches from Salisbury to Falmouth. In Exeter, Co Cars operates the Co Bikes docked, on-street electric bike hire network. Due to its early entry into this market, the Society has unparalleled experience and a strong reputation in this fast moving sector.

Mobility is one of life’s essentials. We need to travel for our jobs, education and leisure. But for environmental, social and financial reasons, the days of fossil-fuelled private car ownership are numbered.

This is where Co Cars steps in. It has pioneered sustainable shared mobility since 2005. This allows everyone to move without anyone having to own a fossil- fuelled or electric car. Co Cars helps to create healthy, urban environments where people can get the transport they need, exactly when they need it. And all for an affordable price.

Co Cars' biggest network is centred on Exeter. Here, it has over 1200 active members who can book and access on-demand 30 cars and 95 electric bikes 24/7 via their smartphones. Cars can be booked from as little as half an hour and bikes in increments of 20 mins. Together, they have already taken 150 cars off the road and remove 149 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere every year.

By the end of 2021, the Society wants to increase its Exeter car fleet to at least 55 shared cars, of which over half will be fully electric, and to expand its electric bike network to a minimum of 150 bikes.

This growth is expected to increase the membership to 5,000, taking an additional 150 private cars off the roads of Exeter and removing a further 230 tonnes of CO2 from the city's atmosphere per annum. It will help tackle congestion and pollution in a rapidly growing city whilst giving everyone affordable access to the latest low carbon transport.

Community and partnerships

The Co Cars team is drawn from a diverse range of backgrounds including circular economy, logistics, public transport, housing and renewable energy as well as its own members.

The longevity and experience of the businesses has enabled it to build lasting, trusted relationships with local stakeholders and members. This creates a real sense of community ownership of the cars and bikes.

Co Cars is proud to be a not-for-profit, cooperative social enterprise. Many of its stakeholders choose to work with the Society for this very reason: it is invested in the purpose, not the profit.

“Co Cars have impressed me with their enthusiasm, professionalism and knowledge of how shared mobility solutions benefit all transport partners, businesses and, most importantly, our customers.” Andrew Ardley, Regional Development Manager, South Western Railway

Co Cars works in close partnership with stakeholders across the South West that include local authorities, housing developers, private businesses and public transport operators.

The time spent developing and maintaining these relationships, alongside the unique offer of both shared cars and bikes translates into a robust new business pipeline. This means Co Cars is predicting that, by 2024, it will have over 100 cars and at least 250 bikes. The business feels there is huge scope for additional growth across the South West region and beyond.
