Energise Africa

Social performance

Energise Africa is providing people living in rural sub-Saharan Africa with a chance to access clean, reliable, and sustainable energy.

The new solar home systems that Energise Africa is funding provide a better quality of light for longer hours, so houses are being lit up for longer using solar light than previously when using kerosene.  Children are using these extended light hours to read and learn for longer in the evening, with businesses' customer feedback reporting that children are learning for an hour longer each night.

Quality of life

Investment in a solar home systems saves money for families and businesses over the medium term as they cut the costs of buying kerosene.  Solar home systems have also dramatically reduced the cost of charging a mobile phone, which can now be done from home more easily, meaning people don't have to spend money at a phone charging kiosk. Businesses benefit financially from solar power too.  Solar home systems allow businesses to increase their opening hours and, therefore, see increases in sales.

Health and security

Replacing kerosene lamps with solar lights has cut out the harmful fumes that result from burning kerosene.  Families are reporting significant improvements in air quality and general health.  Solar lights provide clean and sustainable energy with no harmful side effects.

In some cases, solar home systems are powering security lights on the outside of homes, leading to these households reporting feeling safer and more secure.
