Energise Barnsley

Social performance

Energise Barnsley is a Community Benefit Society set up to deliver community-owned renewable energy, energy efficiency and energy supply projects.

Key Social Performance Indicators (KSPIs)

KSPIs are a measure of how the business is performing on delivering its main social or environmental purpose. Read more

KSPI 1 - Lower electricity bills

Energise Barnsley has installed around 1MW of photovoltaic (PV) solar assets on 321 residential homes in Barnsley, which are already operational and is looking to install an additional 1MW through this bond offer. Berneslai Homes residents who have received the solar PV installation are benefitting from lower electricity bills by using the free electricity, when the solar panels are in operation. The tenants of the commercial buildings, schools and council owned community centers will benefit from lower electricity bills for twenty years. To date there has already been over £10,496 collective savings from tenants on electricity. This figure should increase once the project is complete.

KSPI 2 - Community fund

The community energy fund has been designed to retain all surplus income from the Feed In Tariff, for the benefit of the local community. It is projected that over the course of the project, over £400,000 will be paid from all surplus income generated into the community energy fund. Energise Barnsley directors have modelled paying out a minimum of £10,000 per annum starting from year two, after an initial £20,000 in year one. The directors took the decision to have an overall lower community fund in total, by paying out regular sums from the outset, instead of waiting until the last years of the project to amass a community fund higher in total, but less in real terms.

Allocation of the yearly contribution to the Community Fund, and the chosen beneficiaries of the community fund will be subject to a vote by members at the AGM.

Carbon emissions

Carbon emissions will be reduced across the Metropolitan Borough, with 129 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions already having been reduced.

Predicted CO2 saving per annum is over 900 tonnes per year, based on warranted performance of the systems, on actual residential installs and a forecasted 1.1MW of commercial installs. This will give rise to over 18,0000 tonnes of CO2 saved over the project lifetime, with CO2 continued to be saved after this time as the panels are still operational.

Staff travel to work

Staff are encouraged to cycle to work, and take up the ‘cycle to work scheme.’ Over 50% of Energise Barnsley staff cycle to work.

Waste and recycling

Waste and recycling bins are placed in all office environments.
