Meadow Blue Community Energy

Social performance

Please note that this offer is now closed (as of midnight on the 24th of November). This information is no longer updated and is for reference purposes only.

MBCE concentrates on projects that reduce the impact of climate change and increase energy security, whilst at the same time generating significant community benefit and supporting the local economy and biodiversity of West Sussex.

A community benefit society operates under the rule of one member, one vote no matter how many shares are owned. In addition the Rules also prevent the sale of assets to commercial organisations. Profits are shared by the members, so when the society does well, the members do well.

Key Social Performance Indicators (KSPIs)

KSPIs are a measure of how the business is performing on delivering its main social or environmental purpose. Read more

KSPI 1 - Carbon Dioxide Reduced

Merton farm solar array is expected to save 50,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum.

KSPI 2 - Energy generation

The solar farm is expected to generate enough electricity to power 1,340 average UK homes over the 25-year lifetime of the programme.

KSPI 3 - Community Fund

Any remaining cash surplus will be used to pay members’ interest, contributions to the Community Fund and for either reinvestment in new projects or to repay members’ capital. The actual amounts available will depend on the overall business performance, but is expected to be over £4m over the 25 lifetime period of the project.

KSPI 4 - Biodiversity

The site of Merston farm is suitable for agricultural use as a wild flower meadow with grazing for sheep. This will benefit local biodiversity.

Moreover, the site is free from classification as an AONB, SSSI, National Park area, flood risks, and is based within relatively flat land. The hedges and tree lines surrounding the site provides a natural barrier that screens the nearby residents and community. The surrounding land is flat meaning the presence of the solar farm will not be prominent within the wider landscape.
