SIS Venture's mission statement and approach

SIS Ventures was created with the overall aim of "supporting and growing high impact organisations through access to mission-aligned investment.

These Mission-led businesses exist across a spectrum of different business models and understand that a positive mission can lead to a better company and societal outcomes. SIS Ventures seeks to work alongside these outstanding individuals to help create long-term scalable social impact.

KSPI 1 - Delivering impact through social investment

SIS Ventures believes that Mission-led Businesses exist across a spectrum of business models. Unlike traditional Social enterprises, these companies are able to distribute all of their profits to investors but understand that a positive mission can lead to better company and societal outcomes.

The fund will focus on mission-led businesses with the following outcome areas:

  • Employment, training and education
  • Citizenship and commmunity
  • Physical and mental health
  • Conservation of the natural environment

Social outcomes will be measured and results reported to Investors on an annual basis, providing information on the impact created by Investee Enterprises and the difference your investment has made. The Manager will imbed social impact objectives through the provision of a Social Impact Term Sheet provided to each potential Investee Enterprise before execution.

Showcase mission-led business - Brewgooder

Brewgooder aims to provide clean water for one million people in developing countries through the power of craft beer by donating 100% of their profits to clean water charities.

Founded in early 2016 with a passion for craft beer and mission to help people, Brewgooder commenced a collaboration with BrewDog, who brew their beer at zero margin. Soon they were backed by almost 1,000 individuals and over 30 bars, bottleshops and restaurants and started brewing their first can of Clean Water Lager.

From October 2016, Asda stores have sold the Clean Water Lager. The Co-Operative has also stocked Brewgooder’s product in 90 branches nationwide since late 2017. Most recently (March 2018), Brewgooder have landed a £62k contract with Aldi to sell their lager in 78 Scottish branches over the next six months. All profits from each sale go towards helping to deliver clean water projects.

Since their establishment, Brewgooder have helped fund 60 projects for over 33k people in Malawi and continue to work towards their mission to sponsor clean water charities in developing countries and impact one million people.

KPSI 2 - Supporting mission-led businesses to scale and improve

For traditional Social Enterprises, it is widely acknowledged that there is a need for ‘risk’ or ‘patient’ capital for organisations looking to scale. The proposed source of capital, and the tax incentives attached, will allow for a higher risk appetite to be applied to the Fund. This is expected to generate significant demand in the market, providing access to growth capital at an affordable cost which is not widely available to ‘asset-locked’ organisations.

Post-investment, the Manager will build a trusted relationship with Investee Enterprises, working with them to understand both the financial aspects of the enterprise and the positive social impact being delivered. This approach provides the necessary support infrastructure to assist the Investee Enterprise during a period of anticipated growth. Each company receives one-to-one support from an independent impact advisor at the beginning of the investment.

Diversity and equality:
SIS Ventures will back diverse teams with a positive and enabling culture; actively seeking founders from under-represented groups; and ensuring appropriate equality policies are in place at investee level. In addition to personnel, SIS Ventures will also look at pay ratios and other governance arrangements to ensure Investee Enterprises have the appropriate structure to deliver on their mission

KPSI 3 - Transparency and reporting

Building on SIS' long track record of impact reporting, SIS Ventures will take a proactive approach to social impact evaluation and reporting. The Manager has engaged New Philanthropy Capital to act as an independent impact advisor to the Fund, developing marketleading impact measurement practices and tools whilst also supporting Investee Enterprises to articulate and measure their impact.

Social outcomes will be measured and results reported to Investors on an annual basis, providing information on the impact created by Investee Enterprises and the difference each individuals investment has made.

Common environmental and social performance indicators (CEPIs & CSPIs)

CEPIs and CSPIs are environmental performance indicators that are common to all businesses, no matter what their main business activity is. Read more
