Solar for Schools

What they do

Solar for Schools CBS's long-term goal is to see every school in the UK using solar panels, contributing to a more sustainable future.

The project

For every £500 of bonds you purchase, you will help schools save and earn between one and two times that amount over the lifetime of the solar panels that will be installed on site, provided by the Solar for Schools CBS. The exact amount a school will benefit is dependent on electricity prices, location and inflation, yet the reduction in carbon emissions that your £500 investment will deliver averages 6 tonnes over the lifetime of the system, whilst inspiring the next generation of children to achieve more by living sustainably.

This bond offer is for the next group of schools, installed in December 2019 and Q1 2020 under the previous Feed in Tariffs (FIT) and for projects without FiT subsidy during 2020. The first 48 systems totalling over 3,000 kWp were funded by previous bond offers raised by the CBS and are all generating electricity and income.

In 2019 all systems funded by Solar for Schools CBS and completed the previous year performed to plan. Some new systems suffered from the usual teething issues during the first months of operation but are expected to perform well going forward.

About Solar for Schools Community Benefit Society (CBS)

The Solar for Schools Community Benefit Society (CBS) was set-up in 2016 to enable schools in England and Wales to benefit from solar panels without having to invest themselves, yet still share in the expected long-term profits, or surplus income, generated by each solar project. The Solar for Schools CBS is governed by a cross-disciplinary board with a depth of experience in renewable energy funding, sustainability education, funding for education, contract management, managing schools and solar energy installations on schools.

Almost 1,000 schools have registered an interest in having solar panels installed and more are registering each week. Solar Options for Schools Ltd works with each school to determine the most suitable system size and to ensure it meets the requirements of the Solar for Schools CBS in terms of forecast income streams over the expected lifetime of each system.
