Social performance

Thera Trust provides people with a learning disability with support and housing that meets their needs and keeps them in the community.

Thera's Trust's vision is that people with a learning disability can be leaders in society. Thera believes that they are the only large provider organisation in the country that employs paid directors with a learning disability.

Thera provides staff support and specialist services to enable them to engage fully in society and have personal control and choice in their lives as equal citizens in their local community.

Most of the work that Thera undertakes is delivered under contracts with around 50 local authorities across England and Scotland which account for 99% of the Charity's income. Thera has a long standing relationship with most of their local authority customers.

Some key statistics from Thera's work so far, Thera:

  • supports over 1,800 people across England and Scotland
  • has supported people with a learning disability for 17 years
  • pays the majority of its support staff above the proposed national living wage

Key Social Performance Indicators (KSPIs)

KSPIs are a measure of how the business is performing on delivering its main social or environmental purpose. Read more

KSPI 1 - Care and support to individuals with a learning disability

This is the main area of Thera’s work. It aims to support people to achieve their ambitions, increase their independence and social/personal wellbeing with support in many aspects of their day-to day lives, helping them to maintain a tenancy and build circles and networks of support in their local community.

KSPI 2 - Housing support to individuals with a learning disability

People with a learning disability often need a specially adapted property in which to live. This might be because they use a wheelchair, need ceiling tracking for a hoist to help them move around their house or need particular aspects of their property protected or strengthened.

Thera supports people with a learning disability to find somewhere suitable to live which meets their specific needs through their charitable housing company, Forward Housing. Thera aim to provide an ‘ordinary house on an ordinary street’ in the local community in which someone chooses to live, creating the foundations for an independent and fulfilling life.

Thera does this either by acting as a broker between the individual with a learning disability and registered housing providers or by leasing or acquiring and adapting properties directly. Where Thera does purchase a property directly, Forward Housing then leases it to one of the registered housing providers we partner with, who grant a tenancy to the Individual. Thera works in close partnership with a small number of registered housing providers who specialise in supporting people with a learning disability.

Thera's beneficiaries may also need support to maintain their house, especially if they are a tenant. This might be help to keep their house tidy and clean and to ensure that they are living in a healthy and safe home. Others may need more intensive support to ensure that their property is not damaged, that they get on well with their neighbours and that they fulfil all of the other requirements of a tenancy.

The Charity currently supports over 60 people in properties owned by our property company Forward Housing and we intend to use the proceeds of the Bond Issue to acquire and adapt more properties for people with a learning disability over the next five years.

KSPI 3 - Employer and family support

Increasingly, people with a learning disability are taking advantage of receiving their assessed entitlement to social care by way of a direct payment, which enables them to have direct control of their social care funding and to purchase for themselves the support that they need. Thera has begun to help people who want to use these funds to employ their own staff, to find the right personal assistants and to be good employers.

Thera also provides short break services for people to take a break  independently of their family and to give their family carers some time off. This may be in a building provided by Thera, where people come to enjoy some time away with full support from staff, or Thera supports people to take a break away on holiday, supporting someone to go to a place of their choice. They also run a fully adapted and supported hotel for beneficiaries in London.

KSPI 4 - Financial advocacy and appointeeship

Thera provides financial support to individuals in a variety of ways. This includes person-centred appointeeship (for receiving and managing people’s welfare benefits), account management, financial advocacy and one-off money checks. This support enables people to have choice and control over their own money.
