Community Energy 2030 vision published

Last week, Community Energy England launched their Community Energy 2030 Vision alongside their State of the Sector Report.

The Vision document is a great publication, clearly setting out what community energy is, the numerous social and environmental benefits it brings and showcasing the ambitions of the sector as we move towards 2030. It was formed from the input of a wide range of sector practitioners and explains how community energy can shape a decentralised, decarbonised and democratic energy system for the future, a vision we at Ethex wholeheartedly support.

The Community Energy 2030 Vision was produced in collaboration with Power to Change and the Friends Provident Foundation to help to provide a strong foundation and unified voice for the sector. As well as working to illustrate why and how community energy is a viable choice for the energy system of the future, it also provides some inspiring case studies, including the pioneering Project LEO in Oxfordshire.

Since 2012, the community energy sector has managed to grow whilst also being flexible and adaptable - responding to a range of different energy-related needs. Both of these publications show that this is a crucial time for the sector as it moves towards a new era and tries to gather strength and move forward out of the COVID-19 crisis, playing an important role in building back better and achieving a just transition both for the energy sector and also for society.

The State of the Sector Report demonstrates how 2019 was a challenging year for the community energy sector, having been negatively impacted by recent reductions in subsidy support and unclear government strategy. But despite this, the report shows that community energy is playing an ever-increasing role in technological and social innovation. The sector is developing new business models and exploring innovative new approaches to deliver a low carbon future.

We welcome the publication of both of these important documents and support the vision outlined where community energy forms an important part of the energy generation mix for the future, bringing multiple benefits for all.
