Harborough Solar One

Who benefits

Harborough Energy will fund and manage renewable energy installations throughout the community of Market Harborough and the local area.

Community benefits

Providing significant community benefits is central to Harborough Energy’s objectives. Specifically, the Society aims to:

  • Create opportunities for local individuals and businesses to invest in and realise a reasonable financial return from local renewable energy projects.
  • Set up a local community fund to support local community aspirations e.g. helping to fund investment in insulation and heating programmes to enable residents to enjoy affordable warmth.
  • Reduce carbon emissions.

The projects

Harborough Solar One, was established as a vehicle for the Society's first share offer and was set up as a Community Benefit Society. This, the second share offer, will be offered to its existing members and opened to new investment. Harborough Solar One’s first project was established in October 2016 and members received the anticipated return on their investment in October 2017. The project continues to perform in line with forecasts.

Project phase 1: Woodnewton Academy and Archway House

As part of the Harborough Solar One project, Harborough Energy set up their first solar installation at a nearby academy.

Woodnewton Academy is a learning community located on the northern edge of Corby. It was opened as a primary school in 2006 and became an academy, part of the Woodnewton Academy Trust, in 2012. The facilities cater as a nursery, reception and run through to Year 6.

Harborough Energy oversaw the installation of 57kW solar panels, spread across four of the academy’s roofs. The Harborough Solar One project has enabled Woodnewton to feel the financial benefits of a solar panel installation with no upfront cost.

Archway Health Hub is a natural health centre based on Lubenham Hill, Market Harborough. The health centre offers an extended range of services to include a hearing clinic and physiotherapy services. These have added to the natural health therapies including acupuncture, sports massage and chiropractic.

Harborough Energy has managed the installation of 10.4kW solar panels across the south-facing roofs of Archway Health Hub. The installation is part of the Harborough Solar One (HS1) scheme, meaning that it comes at no upfront cost to the health centre.

Community fund

A key point in Harborough Energy governing Rules is that any surplus the Society generates has to be put towards the benefit of the community, in this case to support other local energy and fuel poverty projects across the district of Leicestershire.
