2022 - A positive story for Ethex!
Thanks to all our investors for a year of positive impact!
We’re now into the final few weeks of 2022 and we wanted to pause and reflect on the past 12 months as we look ahead to a new year. This year has been a difficult year for many. As lives return to something like normal after the pandemic, the energy and cost of living crises have hit many households hard this year and we have seen this reflected in lower levels of investment in some of the offers we have had on our platform this year.But despite the fact that many people are tightening their belts, here at Ethex, we have still seen hundreds of dedicated investors using their money to support some of the extraordinary organisations we have featured, taking real action to tackle climate change and improve lives, and that is something we want to celebrate.
So, we wanted to publish a brief overview of all the brilliant things we’ve achieved together this year and share some much-needed good news and positivity!
The Big Numbers
In 2022, we have successfully filled 13 investment opportunities, raising £millions to help organisations with positive environmental or social missions. These ranged from local businesses such as The Ultimate PicturePalace in Oxford to a small organic dairy farm to organisations that tackle homelessness, the housing crisis and of course, community clean energy and sustainable transport projects. And we have made over £2.6 million in repayments to 9335 investors over 42 projects this year.
We’re incredibly proud of the impact our investors are helping to create. By supporting these businesses, they have removed tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere, created quality, affordable and sustainable homes for people and helped to build stronger communities.

This year we have been speaking with several of our investors to better understand their motivations for investing with us and being able to improve our service. One of the things that we hear time and again from investors is that they are really driven y creating an impact with their money. So we like to keep them up to date with some of the amazon things that they have helped to create. In this blog, we’re sharing a few good news stories about projects that have been funded by Ethex investors.
COMBATTING HOMELESSNESS
Taking people off the streets in Edinburgh
Last year, our investors successfully raised over £680,000 to fund Common ground Against Homelessness’s share offer and in 2022, the organisation owned the doors to a new home for 9 homeless men in Edinburgh, offering them a safe, affordable and dignified home for life with support to help them tackle their mental health and addiction issues and look to a brighter future! Brighter futures in Leeds
Leeds Action to Create Homes (LATCH) has been improving the lives of homeless people in Leeds for over 30 years by refurbishing derelict and run-down properties and providing training, employment and homes for people in the area facing homelessness. Our investors raised over 150% of the target £350,000 to fund the development of more new homes. And in their 2022 Annual Report, they reported that this year, they handed over the keys to their 100th home, meaning they now support around 200 adults and children each year to create a positive new start. In 2022, they created 23 new homes and 33 of their tenants were able to move on to a brighter future with the support and skills offered by LATCH.
A solution to homelessness in the UK
And in 2022, our investors raised £400,000 to help Greater Change - a truly pioneering homelessness charity - to grow and help even more people find a permanent way out of homelessness. To date, the organisation has supported 621 people and saved the government more than £16 million and their impact looks set to keep on growing!
FIGHTING CLIMATE CHANGE
Improving EV uptake in Oxford
Earlier this year, we successfully closed a bond offer from Oxfordshire-based EZ-Charge that funded an EV charging project in public car parks that will enable more people to make the switch to electric vehicles, creating cleaner air and cutting carbon emissions. The Park & Charge project has now been completed and consists of a network of 250 EV charging points across Oxfordshire.
A groundbreaking community energy projectThis year, we also heard from Bristol Energy Cooperative (BEC), who have raised more than £2 million via raises on the Ethex platform, that they have successfully completed the installation of more than 2,000 community-owned solar panels on the new Bottle Yard Studios' filming hub in Bristol. This makes it one of the biggest community-owned energy projects in the UK and it is capable of generating enough clean energy to power more than 250 average Bristol households per year. It’s a fantastic example of our investors putting their money to work to help deliver on our net-zero ambitions!
IMPROVING LIVES
Revolutionising the booking for sign language interpreters
Our investors also supported Signalise, raising more than £300,000 for this amazing organisation that helps deaf people to access sign language interpreters to help with everyday tasks and appointments. The business is now delivering interpreting to six NHS contracts across Merseyside as well as increasing business in other areas they are gaining a great reputation across Merseyside and are showing the benefits of a community-owned interpreting business and how this brings higher social value to all involved.
