Why community wind power matters more than ever

Exploring why community-owned wind power matters more than ever - and how you can support it

The UK’s transition to clean energy is gaining momentum. Renewables now generate a record share of our electricity, with wind power leading the way, delivering around a third of Great Britain’s power and playing a crucial role in cutting carbon emissions and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

This progress shows what’s possible. Wind is one of the UK’s most abundant natural resources, capable of producing large-scale, low-carbon energy at speed. But meeting our climate goals and near-zero carbon electricity will require continued investment, public support, and new ways of doing energy differently.

Wales: A natural home for community-led wind power
Wales has long been at the forefront of renewable energy, with strong wind resources and a growing ambition to make sure the benefits of clean power are shared fairly and locally.

Across the country, community energy groups are calling for greater support, with proposals for a Community Wealth Fund to help communities own and benefit from renewable assets. Welsh Government initiatives are also backing locally owned energy projects that cut emissions, strengthen local economies, and keep profits circulating in communities.

Community-owned wind projects can generate clean electricity while building community resilience and long-term value for the places they serve.

The benefits of energy owned by and for communities
We’re big supporters of the UK’s community energy movement, and we know that when communities have a stake in renewable energy:
  • Carbon emissions fall
  • Local income and jobs are created
  • Our energy systems become fairer and more resilient
  • Individuals get more involved in the conversation
We strongly believe that community energy is the future of the UK’s clean and inclusive energy transition, and we want to help as many people get on board to support it as possible.

Get involved: Support YnNi Teg
The YnNi Teg community share offer gives you the opportunity to invest in a new community-owned wind turbine in Wales, helping to generate clean power for decades while supporting local benefit.

The wind turbine at Ceredigion will generate enough clean energy to power 750 homes and reduce UK CO₂ emissions by about 9,750 tonnes over its lifetime. But, more than that, it will create an additional £200,000 for the community benefit fund over the turbine’s 25-year lifetime to help even more community organisations to decarbonise and save energy.

We believe that 2026 can be a turning point for UK renewables. By backing community-led wind power today, we can help to unlock the UK’s clean energy potential while ensuring the transition works for people as well as the planet.
