Energise Africa is an online impact investing platform brought to you by two of Europe's leading online investing platforms, Ethex and Lendahand who have joined forces to provide everyday people with opportunities to invest in pioneering businesses that supply life-changing solar systems to homes in Sub-Saharan Africa - bringing clean energy and economic opportunities to families.
Energise Africa enables ordinary people to invest in pioneering solar businesses. This provides them with the low-cost working capital that they urgently need to provide rural families with pay-as-you-go solar energy, that would otherwise be out of their financial reach. Over the next 3 years, Energise Africa aims to provide the investment needed to enable 1 million people to gain access to clean and renewable energy - mitigating hundreds of thousands of tonnes of CO2 emissions.
Energise Africa is supported by UK aid, Virgin Unite, Good Energies Foundation and P4G to accelerate progress towards the achievement of the UN agreed Global Goal 7 - to ensure access to af-fordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all by 2030.
Over 600 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa do not have access to electricity, restricting their quality of life and limiting their chances of achieving economic prosperity.
However, there is a solar revolution happening in Africa, with costs of solar panels and electrical appliances falling, making the vision of solar-powered villages a reality.
Energise Africa's long-term goal is to increase access to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy in areas where it is most needed.
Since Energise Africa launched in October 2017, we have raised almost £10 million in investments, giving over 358,000 people access to clean and affordable solar energy. with your investment, we can work to provide thousands more homes in rural areas with clean affordable energy over the next 3 years.
Energise Africa makes it simple to invest in projects that generate a demonstrable social and envi-ronmental impact, whilst also aiming to provide a financial return.
1) Choose a project
You can lend money to one of the solar businesses working with Energise Africa via a fixed-term Innovative Finance ISA eligible bond. These businesses sell small solar systems to families throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. The businesses listed with Energise Africa are carefully selected after an extensive due diligence process and approval from the Investment Committee.
Some projects will have a first loss provision and/or a match funding element which will help to am-plify the impact of your investment on the ground. Projects that benefit from these will be clearly indicated. In addition, for first-time investors your capital is guaranteed up to £100. Terms and conditions apply.
You should consider the expected returns, the time taken for your money to be repaid, and the risk of investing in the solar business.
2) Purchase a bond from a pioneering solar business
You can invest as little as £50 via a fixed term bond. You can invest immediately online via bank transfer. You will be able to see the status of your investment in your Energise Africa portfolio and you can make subsequent investments in new investment opportunities at any time. Once a project is fully funded, the money is transferred to the solar business on the first day of the following month and your interest starts accruing from this date. With our New Investor Guarantee, first investments of up to £100 are now guaranteed to be repaid. Terms and conditions apply.
3) Create new opportunities for African families
The solar business uses your investment to purchase solar home systems and then sells these sys-tems to African families via a pay-as-you-go financing plan. The families make monthly payments using credit on their mobile phone. After 12 - 24 months, the family typically owns the system out-right.
You can follow the impact that your money is having on the ground via your Energise Africa portfolio which will update you on where the solar systems have been installed, what kind of people this investment has helped and how many people now have affordable energy as a result of this investment.
4) Get your money back
Typically, every six months, the solar business makes a repayment with interest. You then receive your share of these funds in your Energise Africa wallet. You can ask for these funds to be repaid to you or you can invest them in a new project. To date Energise Africa have made close to £3 million of repayments to investors. Please remember your capital is at risk and repayments are not guaranteed, past performance is no guarantee of future success.
