Energise Africa is a campaign brought to you by two of Europe's leading online investing platforms, Ethex and Lendahand who have joined forces to provide UK based retail investors with opportunities to invest in pioneering businesses that install life-changing solar systems in homes in Sub-Saharan Africa - bringing clean energy and economic opportunities to families.
Through the Energise Africa campaign, Ethex and Lendahand will provide businesses that sell and install solar home systems in Sub Saharan Africa with the working capital that they urgently need to provide rural families with solar energy, that would otherwise be out of their financial reach. Over the course of the next 3 years, Energise Africa aims to provide the investment needed to enable 111,000 rural families to gain access to clean and renewable energy.
The Energise Africa campain is supported by UK aid and Virgin unite, who are supporting this initiative to accelerate progress towards the achievement of the UN agreed Global Goal 7 - to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all by 2030.
130 million families and over 600 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa do not have access to electricity, limiting their chances of achieving economic prosperity and an improved quality of life.
Energise Africa's long-term goal is to accelerate access to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy in areas where it is most needed. The falling costs of solar technology have created a new set of pioneering businesses working on installing life-changing solar systems in homes in Sub-Saharan Africa.
With your investment, we can work to provide 111,000 homes in rural areas with clean affordable energy over the next 3 years.
Energise Africa makes it simple to invest in projects that generate a demonstrable social and environmental impact, whilst also aiming to provide a financial return.
1) Choose a project
You can lend money to one of the solar businesses working with Energise Africa via a fixed-term bond. These businesses sell small solar systems to families throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. The businesses listed with Energise Africa are carefully selected and full credit risk assessments are carried out with the support of INRISC - a provider of tools to measure and monitor credit risk.
Some projects will have a first loss provision and/or a match funding element which will help to amplify the impact of your investment on the ground. Projects that benefits from these will be clearly indicated.
You will need to consider the return you are expected to receive, the time taken for your money to be repaid, and the risk of investing in the solar business.
2) Provide a loan
You can invest as little as £50, alongside the crowd via a fixed term bond. You can pay immediately or online or later by bank transfer. You will also be able to see the status or your investment in your Lendahand Ethex account and you can add more to your loan at any time. Once a project is fully funded, the money is transferred to the solar business on the first day of the following month and your interest starts accruing from this date.
3) Create new opportunities for African families
The solar business uses your loan to purchase solar home systems and then sells these systems to African families via a financing plan. The families make monthly payments using credit on their mobile phone. After 12 - 24 months, the family typically owns the system outright.
4) Get your money back
Every six months, the solar business makes a repayment with interest. You then receive your share of these funds in your Lendahand Ethex account. You can ask for these funds to be repaid to you or you can invest them in a new project. Please remember your capital is at risk and repayments are not guaranteed.
Please also be aware that the ability of the business to pay interest or repay your intial investment is dependent upon it being able to deliver against its business plan.
