The Big Picture

The Headingley Development Trust is a community membership organisation that has over 1,200 members and takes an enterprise-based approach to improve the lives of people who live, work in and visit Headingley - a vibrant suburb of Leeds. Helped by the creation of the Headingley Investment Fund (in which everyday people can invest), this pioneering community initiative has improved and developed the local area by funding affordable housing, an enterprise and arts centre, a farmer’s market and many other community projects, creating a thriving centre for residents and visitors alike and providing a template for other communities to follow suit.

“We would not have been able to make the positive changes to the Headingley community without this investment and people’s belief that they can make a difference. The share offer enabled the development of new sustainable and affordable homes and establishing a local farmers’ market and greengrocer.”

The Big Numbers

  • Over £480,000 raised, exceeding their original £400,00 target.
  • Purchased a semi-derelict house in the local area, redeveloping it into a desirable and affordable home with enhanced energy performance.
  • Refinanced Headingley Enterprise and Arts Centre’s (HEART) existing loan on more favourable terms, ensuring that this well-loved community hub has the resources needed to continue to operate, providing a great space for events, classes, shared workspace, room hire and a licensed cafe, and keeping more money circulating in the local economy.
  • Delivered a new community-owned business - The Headingley Greengrocer - giving more than 20,000 people in the local area access to good, local, sustainable and affordable food.
  • To date, they have returned over £18,000 to investors as interest or additional shares.

"Thanks to investors in the Headingley Investment Fund, the community enjoys sustainable, local high-quality fruit and veg from our community greengrocer. It's a fantastic local resource."
