Ethex fuels 1/5 of community energy investment

Impact investors using our platform contributed £4.28 million to energy projects across the UK, representing 18% of all new investment raised by the sector last year and half of all community shares and bonds issued.

Investing in communities, not corporations

The Community Energy: State of the Sector 2025 report from Community Energy England,  Community Energy Wales and Community Energy Scotland shows that in 2024, across the country, community energy organisations raised a total of £24 million to fund a wave of new projects, from solar arrays and wind farms to low-carbon transport schemes and retrofit initiatives. These projects are generating clean, renewable energy while cutting energy bills, creating local jobs, and delivering lasting community benefits, helping to build a fairer, more sustainable future. Through Ethex, thousands of individual investors are proving that their money can be a force for good. By choosing to back community-led initiatives, they are helping to tackle the climate emergency, fight fuel poverty, and strengthen local economies one investment at a time.

To achieve the government’s ambitious targets for 2030, the sector needs to double in size every year, just as it did between 2014 and 2017. Accelerating growth in 2025

Ethex investors contributed close to a fifth of the sector’s total funding in 2024, and we’ve already surpassed last year’s total in the first eight months of 2025. That rapid growth highlights the increasing appetite among UK investors to put their money where their values are, backing projects that deliver measurable social and environmental returns.
