Local energy solutions for the climate crisis
How Brighton & Hove Energy Services Cooperative are pioneering solutions at a local level to tackle the climate, energy and cost of living crises and why they need investment to help them.
In his speech at the start of the COP28 Climate talks in Dubai, King Charles stated unequivocally that the human race's actions have led us to several environmental "tipping points" beyond which the effects of climate change cannot be stopped. He emphasised the importance of world leaders taking on the challenge of saving the planet, saying, "I can only urge you to meet it with ambition, imagination, and a true sense of the emergency we face."It remains to be seen whether world leaders will heed his call and take decisive action to reduce carbon emissions. What is in no doubt, however, is the tremendous work being done by communities across the UK that are taking local action to combat the global climate emergency. Decarbonising our schools
On the path to net zero, we believe it makes sense to prioritise our schools. Installing solar panels on schools not only brings benefits in terms of reducing carbon emissions and saving money, but it also has the added advantage of inspiring and educating future generations about sustainability.
Brighton & Hove Energy Services Co-operative (BHESCo) are currently raising funds via an IF ISA Bond offer on Ethex to provide the vital up-front costs needed to install solar arrays on five schools, which will save the schools £3.1 million on energy bills and mitigate 2,700 tonnes of CO2 over the lifetime of the panels.
For at least the next 25 years, the schools will benefit from affordable, clean solar energy. On average, the solar energy produced will meet 78% of the school’s annual electricity needs. We strongly believe that actions like these are needed to start turning the tide on climate change. The more people who get on board to support carbon-cutting projects like this, the closer we are to reaching our net zero goals and avoiding some of the devastating effects of the climate crisis.
Pioneering change at a local level
In addition to installing solar on schools, the funds raised from bond investments will allow BHESCo to install solar power on three businesses in the Sussex area, continuing the pioneering work they have been doing since 2015.
According to BHESCo, the development of local clean energy systems that are owned and operated in the interests of the communities they serve is a key solution to long-term affordable energy security.
