At a time when US President Donald Trump is grabbing headlines by calling renewable energy “a con job,” here in the UK, we’re seeing a surge in people-powered investment into clean energy and social impact.
This July has been a landmark month for Ethex. Across the country, individuals have been putting their money where their values are, backing ambitious, community-led projects that tackle climate change, create local benefit, and promote financial fairness.
Energise South Downs: Fully funded in just 10 days
Earlier this month, the Energise South Downs community share offer hit its £302,000 target in just 10 days. The funding will install solar panels on three community buildings in Hampshire, cutting carbon and lowering energy costs for local businesses, proving that communities are more than ready to take charge of their clean energy future.

Big Solar Co-op: More than £1 million to move a coal mine to clean power
Also proving popular with investors, Big Solar Co-op’s latest bond offer has smashed through its initial £800,000 target, reached £1 million in under a month, and is now heading toward its £1.8 million maximum. These funds will help transform a former coal mine into a large, ethical solar park, a powerful symbol of moving beyond fossil fuels.

Salad Money: £1 million for fair finance
And it’s not just about energy. This week, social lender Salad Money also celebrated its biggest-ever raise on Ethex, with £1 million invested in a successful bond offer. By providing fair and affordable loans to workers excluded from mainstream finance, they’re helping people avoid predatory payday lenders and build a stronger financial future.

Everyday investors making a difference
These wins reflect a growing movement. Across the UK, people are choosing to take action, not by protesting, but by taking positive action by investing in the kind of future they believe in. Together, they’re reclaiming power (literally) from the energy giants and putting it back into the hands of the people who use it.
As our CEO, Lisa Ashford MBE, puts it:
“The contrast couldn’t be clearer. While global headlines are dominated by political soundbites dismissing renewables, across the UK, people are taking action by investing directly in community-owned clean energy and fair finance. July has been a landmark month for Ethex, and it shows that people are ready to step up and finance a better future for people and the planet, starting at just £50.”
At Ethex, we believe finance should be a force for good. And this July, our amazing investor community has shown just how powerful that force can be. From all of us at Ethex, thank you. For backing pioneering ideas and investing in projects that benefit people and the planet. Collectively, we can build the future we all want to see.
